It’s OK to change your mind…

So you finally finished school and went off to college only to find yourself on a course or in a place you don’t really want to be.

It’s normal. Trust me.

Asking a 16 year old what they want to do for the rest of their life is, quite frankly, ridiculous. And so many of us, at this crucial stage in life, end up choosing a course or college because that’s what our friends are doing, but before long the classes become mundane and dull for the simple reason that you are just not interested. You start to daydream about what you’d prefer to be doing – which is usually anything that doesn’t involve sitting in a classroom all day. You had years of that in school and you are done! You’re realising that sitting in a classroom reading from a textbook just isn’t for you and that you’d rather learn by doing something more hands on. You think back to your last year at school and try to remember what other options you had.

Wait….what’s that?…..oh, it’s your light bulb moment! You remember hearing about work-based learning and apprenticeships were you can learn on-the-job and earn some money at the same time! ‘Why didn’t I choose this path in the first place?’ you think to yourself but it doesn’t even matter, whats important now is that you have made a decision based on what YOU want and not what all your friends are doing. Sure it’s a bit scary but there’s one thing you need to remember – you’re not alone. So many people make the wrong choice and that’s OK. How can you ever know what is right for you without knowing what is wrong for you?

Life is full of mistakes and so it should be. Just be sure to learn from them.
