What to do after Year 11

So you’ve settled into your final year of school. You may think the end point is miles away but I’m afraid you’re mistaken. It won’t be long before you’re signing each others shirts and yearbooks and making arrangements for prom night! And then before you know it…..BOOM! It’s all over.

Five years of studying, laughing, revising, detentions, friendship, learning….done. Over. Finished.

So what happens next?

Well first of all expect your teachers and career advisers to be hounding you throughout your last year to make a decision on what you want to do with the rest of your life – like that’s an easy question to answer! No Pressure!

Some of you might already know and have always known and that’s great. As for the rest of you, some will think you know, the rest will have no clue (which is OK by the way!)

If you think you know what you want to do you probably have this glamorous and perfect picture in your head of what you think a certain career will be like……trust me, whatever you think this career is like, chances are it’s nothing like what you imagine.

For those who have no clue, you may feel like you’re the only one and everyone around you has it all figured out. They don’t. You’re not alone.

So whether you have it all figured our or not – Shape is here to help!

Know exactly what course you want? Great – we’ll set you on your way to getting you qualified and into the world of work.

Haven’t got a clue? Then you’ve come to the right place…

Our Career Pathways programme is designed exactly for this situation. Here it is in a nutshell…..

  • English and maths support – with GCSE resits if needed.
  • Employability Skills
  • Various work placement opportunities for you to try so you can find out what the jobs are really like on a day-to-day basis.

We basically want to help you figure out what your next move should be before you commit to a 2 year course. Simple.

Interested? come along to our open day this month (27th Oct) to meet the Career Pathways team and have a chat.

It’s National Apprenticeship Week!!

Apprenticeships are a great way to expand you skills and experience whilst working towards a qualification. So whether you have finished (or due to finish) school or are looking to start fresh new career an apprenticeship could be just what you need! But how do you know if an apprenticeship is right for you?

Here are just a few of the benefits!

Apprenticeships have long been associated with constructions trades but in actual fact you can do an apprenticeship in almost any industry!

You can choose from such a wide range of areas bringing that dream job within reach without the years of full time academic study (and debt!).

So whatever career you dream of – there’s an apprenticeship out there for everyone. Here at Shape Training we offer apprenticeships in:

  • Childcare
  • Dental Nursing
  • Health & Social Care

Gaining a qualification….

You will spend most of your time as an apprentice ‘on-the-job’ but that’s not to say you won’t be learning too. Generally apprentices allocate one day a week for their studies. The type of qualification you get will depend on what level apprenticeship you undertake; you can find out more about the different apprenticeship levels here….

Earn while you learn…

Apprenticeships are a great way to learn, get qualified and climb the career ladder without getting into a tonne of student debt! As an apprentice you are classed as employed and will be earning your own wage. For information on the national minimum wage for apprentices click here:

Advice, support and guidance…

Going straight in to full-time employment after school or a break in learning or work can be daunting but don’t worry, help and guidance is available wherever you do your apprenticeship, here at Shape Training we pride ourselves on treating each learner as an individual and understanding that we don’t all work in the same way or at the same pace. You’re more than just a name on a piece paper to us!

Improving career prospects…

Spending so much time on-the-job has some great benefits, one that is often overlooked is networking! You will get to build a network of contacts. Impress people with a good, hard-working attitude and the world is your oyster!
